We got together in mid-April 2005 to help six-year-old Rajan find a match and facilitate bone marrow registration drives in the Bay Area for him. Rajan received a cord stem transplant in June 2005. Sadly his cancer relapsed and he passed away in November 2005.

We will continue to organize donor drives and raise awareness in the South Asian community for other patients like Rajan.

Rajan
(1998 - 2005)

With great sadness, we inform you that Rajan Vyas passed away on the night of Saturday, November 26th. Rajan received a bone marrow transplant in June and initially appeared to maintain a stable condition. His cancer relapsed a few months ago and he went through chemotherapy. A high fever over the weekend was the last straw for him. In his grandfather's words, “Rajan was a brave trooper who fought till the end in spite of his age. He was an example of courage and love to all of the family and friends around him."

We offer our condolences to his parents, Hetal and Arti, his brother Kapil, and his grandfather Kishor Vyas (or Baba).

Since mid-April, many of you in the NetIP community helped organize and volunteer your time at bone marrow registration drives for Rajan. Thank you for your dedication and support.

Rajan's family appreciates all the love, dedication, and support offered by our volunteers to support the drives in and around the Bay Area. A note from the family:

"So many people contributed many hours of their own personal time - weekends, evenings, and holidays - to help in the efforts to find a donor match for Rajan. Your sacrifices and your generosity have touched us all so deeply. We will forever be grateful to have had the experience of knowing what you have all been able to do, not just for Rajan, but for so many countless others, who will benefit from the thousands of additional committed marrow donors you have helped to register with the NMDP. "

NetIP SFBA will continue our efforts to organize donor drives and help others in need. We will have a prayer service at Dolly Parikh's residence in loving memory of Rajan. All are encouraged to bring something to read or share about coping with a loss.

We will continue to organize drives and raise awareness in the South Asian community about the low representation of donors in the National Marrow Registry. This registry is sometimes the only hope for patients suffering from blood diseases (like luekemia) who need a bone marrow transplant.

We need drive hosts -- corporations, races, social gatherings, temples et al. Please email Vivek.

Pitch in as a volunteer: Volunteer help is needed at each drive with flyer distribution, raising awareness and form scrutiny. Volunteers get access to unlimited candy at our booth, chance to win an AADP teddy or action figure and lots of good karma :) Email Vivek.

Become a drive host: We need drive hosts -- corporations, races, social gatherings. Email Vivek.
