Leadership in a Multi-cultural World, SAP Labs, March 23 2006

"Is there a consensus from the individual groups represented on the panel – the Indian, French, German, Chinese and Hispanic – of what the essence of leadership means?" The answer from the panel was a resounding "YES." Regardless of nationality, a leader is viewed as "someone who can inspire others." This was only a snippet of the dialogue on Thursday, March 23 at the event entitled "Leadership in a Multi-Cultural World," moderated by Joel Dreyfuss, Editor-in-chief of Red Herring.
Over 200 attendees spanning all industries descended upon our host, SAP, to network and listen to esteemed panelists share their thoughts on leadership, each adding the unique perspective of their ethnic group. Gautam Godhwani, as envoy for Indian culture, stole some of the attention by charismatically sharing his insights into the impact of ethnicity on the global war for top professional talent. Gautam also shared his experience on the impact of ethnicity in business from his viewpoint as a successful entrepreneur.
This event was the first of its kind; symbolizing a coalition of six separate organizations joining forces to host an insightful professional event. The groups represented included the Silicon French, German American Business Association, Chinese Software Professionals Association, Hispanic Net, Network of Indian Professionals and the Silicon Valley Indian Professional Association. The event started by commentary about the "true diversity that this single event represented."

Sorting experts @ Second Harvest Food Bank, Jun 11, San Mateo

What's the best way to sort a gazillion cans of food?! Is a can of pumpkin a vegetable, fruit, or meal in a can?
These were some challenges NetIP-SFBA volunteers faced at this FUN community event. We sorted 20+ barrels of cans, rice, food, fruits, cereal and more into major categories -- fruit, vegetables, meal in a can, sodas, tuna and more. We were treated to chips and sodas at the end of the event. (the pumpkin can usually ended up in the miscelaneous category).
Thanks to Niru for taking the lead on this event.

Napa Valley Biking Trip, July 30, 2005

We had a fun time bike riding in the gorgeous Napa/ Calistoga Valley. 14 of us started from the Bike rental shop at Yountville at 9:30 am. Our plan was to do split into two groups with one group riding a 30 mile relaxed loop whilethe other group rides upto Calistoga and back. However, plans changed midway and everyone wanted to go to Calistoga to check out the scenery. We started off on busy Hwy 29. The bike lane on 29 even though wide is not very smooth for road bikes. We then cut off the Silverado trail on shady 128. Silverado trail is essentially a less busier road with rolling flattish hills with vineyards on both sides. Due to natural differences in pace, the group split into many smaller groups on Silverado trail. The first group reached beautiful Calistoga downtown at noon. The other group got delayed due to tire flats! We had 6 flat tires in the whole trip and we ran out of kits to fix the flats on the way back! We had lunch at a pizza place in dt Calistoga owned by an Indian!
On the way back some guys took Silverdo trail and the rest went down on Hwy 29 again to be greeted with great views, traffic and tire flats! We were stuck 2 miles south of Calistoga on 29 due to a flat as we ran out of kits to fix it. It was getting warmer with hot air breeze blowing at 10 -20 mph. The first set of people arrived back at the bike rental place at 3:30 pm, took some additional kits and drove to Calistoga to shuttle the last one standing as the bike shop closes at 5:00 pm. Everyone made it to the bike shop by 5pm: tired, drained, however, happy with a sense of accomplishment of riding 40 miles in the wine country. We ended the day with wine tastings at Chandon Vineyards.
